Nostalgic Lens

2012 Heysen Sculpture Biennial B-6 Life is no picnic, or is it? It is all too easy to romanticize bygone eras as simpler times or we could smugly vilify ignorance of early settlers and the unwitting destruction of delicate eco systems. Hindsight distorts the lens of perception. Title nostalgic lens Dimension H 44cm x W 146cm x D 87cm Materials: tin, cooper wire and yarn.

Farm Gate Project

‘Bitter truths you can’t avoid’ Farm gate is it an entrance or a barrier? What lurks beyond the gate? Impish creatures frolic in the paddocks beyond, upon close inspection they appear fierce, even foreboding. Inspired by traditional Sinhalese ‘Demon Dancers’ their outline is reminiscent of the foliage and roots of the Horse radish plant. Armoricia Rusticana is used for both culinary and medicinal purposes. The pungent taste a metaphor ‘Bitter truths you can’t avoid’ conceptually links with the figures which has long played a role in healing and community harmony. Focusing on form and texture Tis Milner-Nichols selects materials for their inherent qualities. The resultant sculptural language develops a narrative to explore the gap between encounter and interpretation.
